Benchmarking Your Energy Consumption : Buildings and Vehicles

You can quickly determine your energy performance by calculating your energy consumption indicator and comparing it with others, a process known as Benchmarking. An energy consumption indicator is a measure of the level of energy consumption, often expressed in terms of energy consumed per unit of some activity measures, e.g. energy consumed per unit floor area per year, expressed in units like MJ/m2/annum or TJ/m2/annum or kWhr/m2/annum; or in the case of transport, energy or fuel consumed per person-km, expressed in MJ/person-km or litre/person-km.

Benchmarking not only enables you to determine the ranking of your energy performance among other users, you can also easily work out the potential energy saving by improving towards a better benchmark.

We have compiled the energy consumption indicators and developed benchmarking tools for many energy-consuming groups. Take a look and try them out. You will get handy advice on reducing your energy or fuel consumption.
